Lesson 3

The Intellect and the Feeling

Find the bedrock.

Each of us has two natures, intellect and feeling. There is a symbol we use to describe these natures, the top half of the circle represents the intellect and the lower half represents the feeling side of us. The intellectual nature wants to know and understand the world, and the feeling nature wants to be part of things.

Any person, who is in balance with these two natures is the one who moves by wisdom.  You will know where you came from, where you are, and where you are going.

The intellectual nature is the analyzing, dissecting, proving part of you. It is like the front wheels of your car that steer the car and provide it with direction. The feeling nature is like the rear wheels of your car. They are connected to the engine, and that is where the real power lies. Without power you’re not going anywhere. We need both the front wheels (intellect) and the rear wheels (feeling) in order to move with direction.

How important to you is finding direction in your life?

Maturity

Value yourself.

The cycle that begins with age 21 and ends with age 28 is one of the most important periods in a person’s life. This cycle of maturity is where things “come together” within oneself. This is when we establish the foundation of our future. If earlier cycles, (especially the first seven years) were difficult, it shows up in this cycle of maturity.

If a child was in a confused environment between the ages of 0 and 7, there can be a feeling of rebellion during this cycle that can lead to hostility and frustration. If the rebellion is strong enough, a person can even destroy themselves in this cycle. The soul wants to better itself but doesn’t believe the good it has within. The programming can be so strong during the first seven years that the spirit can be broken and a sense of worthlessness can take over.

On the other hand, if as a child you were taught to value yourself, you will follow your feelings to accomplish your life purpose. At first you may feel a little guilty for doing what you yourself want to do instead of what your parents thought best for you. But if you follow your feelings and find the lifestyle that fulfills you most, you will feel more satisfaction.

It is important to realize that whatever ambivalent feelings you have about yourself came from your early programming. You cannot blame anyone for it, however, because your parents did the best they knew how. You need to find out what is working for you and what is working against you, and start weeding out the things that are slowing you down.

This is maturity — accepting your responsibility to yourself.

Your place of fellowship during this cycle will reflect the love and respect that you have within yourself. You need to share with other souls with a similar purpose. By sharing your commitment you can help each other reach a deeper communion which will help you grow spiritually.

“It is not the place or the condition, but the mind alone
that can make anyone happy or miserable.”

Pay attention to how you are feeling as you read the material, reflect on your cycle of maturity (age 21-28), what makes you feel secure inside yourself?
