Lesson 4

The Importance of Respect in Society

Self-respect is an important key to life on planet earth. The more you respect yourself, the more you will understand yourself and the easier your life will be. When you respect the unique individual that you are, you will be a proud but kind person, because you will have a balance between your understanding and your feeling.

Our society is great because it is based on respect. A system of man-made rules and regulations has been organized so we can live and grow in peace. We can respect all people because we know where our rights begin and end. Everyone has a good chance for justice so we can share freely and have room to grow. The more we realize that we are free souls, the more we will start thinking for ourselves and respecting ourselves. The more we respect ourselves, the more valuable this freedom becomes.

Yet, our biggest problem in society today is that we do not respect each other. Respect starts with each individual. When we learn to respect our own rights, we will automatically respect the rights of others. Many people spend their time rebelling against the rules of society; in fact, as long as it doesn’t make us feel guilty, we can do anything we want as long as we don’t get caught. If we are caught, society may put us in a mental institution or send us to jail until we learn to conform and respect the rights of others.

Science, Religion, and Society

Science was born because man wanted to know about things. Religion was born because man wanted to be a part of things or to feel “one with God.” That is why it is said that religion is based on feeling and science is based on intellect. Together this makes up society.

What we must come to realize is that science, religion and man-made rules and regulations all have truth, but they are only means to an end. The truth found in religion, science and society are means to help you find yourself. The big problem today is that science, religion and man-made rules have become so highly organized in themselves that they have becomes ends in themselves rather than just a means to an end. Through self-understanding, a person can become a part of these rules and regulations without being controlled by them.

“You can help a person only to the degree that you have helped yourself.”

You Learn From Experience

Tools you can use.

You are the grand total of everything you have experienced through eternity. Your experiences are the foundation of your wisdom. When you understand your experiences you learn from them and build on them to move on to even greater experiences.

For example, when a child is learning to walk, they often fall down. With each fall they learn more about their system of balance. Before long they can walk and run without even thinking about how they do it. A whole new world is open for them to experience because they can walk. They expanded their boundaries.

Every time you learn from your experiences you expand your boundaries. They become tools for you to use. The more you experience, the more you can learn.  It is a never ending process. That is why you hear people say: “The more I know, the more I realize how much more there is to learn.”

Your Responsibility to Yourself

If you feel frustrated in your creations it is because you spend energy thinking without any action. The thought that was stimulated by a feeling becomes caught in the head bouncing back and forth from one concept to the next, without decision. This is an out-of-balance intellectual because there is no true feeling to put it into action. The action stimulates the emotions or the feelings of the intellect to give it energy. So, instead of creating constructively with true feelings, the thought creates inner discord and disease.

Ask yourself: How can I be more true to myself?

You create with every thought you have. It is your responsibility, whether you create with thoughts that are balanced with true feelings, or confused with emotions. You are the one who creates harmony and balance, or discord and disease in your life. Only you bring your state of consciousness into balance.

You always have a choice:

  1. To keep what you have
  2. To move on to something new.

When you are in balance, having a feeling for every thought and a thought for every feeling, there will be no limit to the success you can create for yourself. You can become an artist, painting the picture of your life the way you want it.

How does it feel to know Science, Religion and Society are all a means to an end and it is all up to you.  Any problem can be solved with self-respect.
